Cairo Conference Sustainable Development
 3-5 December 2004

Highlights of Cairo Conference on
Sustainable Development
3-5 December 2004

At the 1994 United Nation's International Conference on Population & Development (ICPD) in Cairo, global values for addressing human well-being and our environment were transformed. 180 nations agreed that a balance between population and resources is essential to preserving both.

It is fitting that, 10 years later, the Rotarian Fellowship for Population & Development and the Humanitarian Service Resource Fellowship sponsor this conference in Cairo to address these concerns on Sustainable Development.

380  Rotarians, from 60 different Countries gathered for three days in Cairo for this important conference. 114 projects were received for Matching Grants.  Below you will find a listing of these Matching Grant projects (not yet finalized) that address Sustainable Development.

The conference was organized by PRID Bill Cadwallader and hosted with exceptional care under the leadership of D 2450 PDG Salem Mashhour and DG Mounir Sabet (brother of Egypt First Lady, H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak).  Two sitting RI Directors were present as well as other Rotary leaders from all corners of the world.

Twenty discussion workshops addressed such topics as Hunger, Water, HIV/AIDS, Micro-enterprise, Litreracy. Population Concerns was a topic woven through the entire agenda, emhasizing its importance as an underlying issue to most other areas of Rotary humanitarian work. A report on Findings was prepared and will be presented to the RI Board and to the Foundation

Key presenters were Awad Tag ElDin, Egyption Minister of Health, Virginia Ofosu-Amaah, past UNFPA Africa Director, and representatives of the World Health Organization, the UN Development Program, and UNICEF.
