This page is for those Rotarians looking for ideas and ways to implement World Community Service (WCS) Projects relating to Population & Development

A     General Comments

  • Usually WCS projects are between a Rotary Club or District in a more developed country and a Rotary Club or District in a less developed country

  • Smaller clubs with limited funds can always join with other club(s) under the "Partnering" concept

  • It is often helpful to collaborate with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or other established agencies with experience in population and development.

  • Two significant support sources wiith offices world-wide in less developed countries are:

          1. The United Nations Population Fund

By clicking above you will bring up Web sites for the UNFPA's regional offices.  Information is provided as well as Email addresses for each region where additional help can be obtained.

UNFPA is a partner of Rotary International in its population work, and can provide technical support in organizing meaningful population projects. You can also Email the UNFPA directly by clicking on the following:
UNFPA.

2 . The United States Agency for International
            Development (USAID)

USAID is the U.S. federal government agency that implements America's foreign economic and humanitarian assistance programs.  It provides assistance in four regions of the world:  Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Near East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Eurasia.  This Agency works in six principal areas crucial to sustainable development including:

  • Population, health and nutrition
  • Education and Training
  • Humanitarian assistance

USAID has an excellent history of working with volunteer organizations in the Population & Development area.

  • For postal addresses and telephone numbers in more than 100 countries, please click on:  USAID Mission Directory, and the clickable map,  USAID Regions & Countries.

  • Also refer to Links this Web site for other agencies and NGOs.

B   Usually, projects for Rotary Club sponsorship fall into two main categories:

  1. Those that have an immediate impact on population
    growth and development
      1. Family Planning assistance
      2. Reproductive Health assistance
      3. Education and counseling - primarily girl children & mothers
      4. Education on Spacing of children
      5. Programs that emphasize male responsibility
      6. Women's empowerment

  2. Those that have a long-term impact on population
    growth and development
      1. Literacy
      2. Microcredit - Village Banking
      3. Skill Development & Employment
      4. Sanitation & Hygiene
      5. Basic education

Projects that combine programs with both immediate and long term impact can be especially effective
