Policy regarding Abortion, United Nations Population Fund

"UNFPA does not support or promote abortion. In June 1985, UNFPA adopted decision 85/19 which affirmed, "It is the policy of the Fund… not to provide assistance for abortion, abortion services or abortion-related equipment and supplies as a method of family planning." This policy remains in effect today.

The 1994 Cairo Programme of Action also banishes abortion by stating, "In no case should abortion be promoted as a method of family planning." Access to effective family planning services is the best means of preventing unwanted pregnancy which leads to abortion."
